January 7th - Men's Hockey vs Yale

The Princeton Alumni Association of Eastern Connecticut invites you to come out on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 7 p.m. to support the Princeton Men's hockey team as they take on Yale at Ingalls Rink in New Haven. Both teams play a fast, up-tempo skating game that is FUN to watch. Princeton's team is one of the youngest in the league--their roster is sprinkled with many freshmen and sophomores who have already drawn the attention of professional scouts. Watch for Berger, Kesselman, Calof, and Ammons as scoring threats for the Tigers. The defense is lead by Derek Pallis and Michael Sdao, a junior who at 6'3" and 230 lbs is a menacing threat defensively and a talented finesse type player on offense who is always a threat to score a goal. Princeton has a sizeable advantage in goal with either Alberta native Sean Bonar or Boston native Mike Condon. It should be a very close, competitive game.

The PAAEC has purchased a block of 80 tickets so that alumni and their families can meet or get re-acquainted while watching the fast paced action of Princeton Hockey. Be advised - this game is sold out - only a few general admission and standing room only tickets remain as of today. We will distribute our tickets to Princeton fans on a first come first serve basis so if you are interested in coming to cheer on the Tigers and enjoying the company fellow alums, family and friends, contact Alan Rosner at alanrosner@aol.com or by phone: (203) 809-0224 and place your order. Also, when you place your order, please let us know if you are interested in getting together after the game. If there is sufficient interest, the PAAEC will reserve space at a nearby restaurant or pizza parlor for a post game schmooze.

Volunteer to Interview Prospective Students!

Every year the Alumni Schools Committee (ASC) accomplishes the incredible feat of offering every Princeton applicant a chance to interview with an alumnus. However, this cannot happen without your help!

The college interview season is rapidly approaching, and Karen Packtor '90, the chair for the Eastern Connecticut ASC is recruiting volunteers! Email her right away at kpacktor@casciac.org!

The work of the ASC does make a difference. A local newspaper in one of our southern US regions reported last year that a high school student who had been accepted at virtually all of the most selective schools in the country chose Princeton and his decision was based on the positive impression of Princeton that was forged through his contacts with local alumni in his interview and at the ASC post-admit reception he attended.

Also, please be assured that Karen will make every effort to assign applicants that will be geographically convenient for you! Last year, each interviewer was assigned four applicants on average, but with some aggressive recruiting efforts this year, Karen hopes to reduce that number. Please note that alumnae/alumni who have a child, grandchild or sibling applying to Princeton must recuse themselves from interviewing (just for the year in which the application is pending). Finally, on behalf of the ASC, Karen would like to thank you for your past and/or future efforts for Princeton and for the next generation of Princetonians!

Peter Beardsley *71 will be hosting a Mediterranean feast at his home in Old Lyme; besides featuring a whole roast lamb, we'll start his 24th annual batch of wine by crushing the grapes, and also bottle last year's batch! As far as bringing anything, it's really not necessary as we always have a superabundance, but you are certainly welcome to bring anything you would like. Directions:

Take I-95 to Exit 71 (Four Mile River Road, OId Lyme).
Turn LEFT at end of ramp onto Four Mile River Rd., regardless of which direction you were traveling on I-95.
About 3/4 mile from the exit ramp you will arrive at a "T" intersection ( 3 way stop signs) with CT 156. Turn RIGHT onto 156.
In about a mile, you will see the Bayberry Inn Motel on your right and Clark Veterinary Hospital on your left. Perhaps 100 yards further along, Mile Creek Road branches of to the right, as 156 curves off to the left. Keep right here. You will pass a very small white country church, Union Chapel, on your right.
About 1/2 mile from the turn you will go over a little bridge, so small you may not notice it. Just ahead a road marked Chestnut Hill with a large sign leads off to the right up the hill. Pass this by, but start slowing down, you are almost there.
In another 100 yards, you will see a pair of black mailboxes with driveways on either side. Our is the closer one, unpaved (The Road Less Traveled). We'll try to have some orange and black ‘Princeton’ balloons.

Please join us for what promises to be a fascinating evening with the Princeton Provost, and legal scholar Chris Eisgruber '83, who will speak on the topic of "The Lock-Step Court: Constitutional Justice in a Polarized America.” Wine, beer, and heavy appetizers will be served. Heather Gerken '91, the J. Skelly Wright Professor of Law at Yale Law School, will introduce the Provost.

About the Provost:

Christopher L. Eisgruber became the 11th Provost of Princeton University on July 1, 2004. He is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Public Affairs in the Woodrow Wilson School and the University Center for Human Values. From 2001 through June 2004, he served as Director of Princeton's Program in Law and Public Affairs. He is the author of The Next Justice: Repairing the Supreme Court Appointments Process (Princeton University Press, 2007) and Constitutional Self-Government (Harvard University Press, 2001), and the co-author, with Lawrence G. Sager, of Religious Freedom and the Constitution (Harvard University Press, 2007). He has also published numerous articles on constitutional law, religious freedom, and jurisprudence. Before joining the Princeton faculty in 2001, he clerked for Judge Patrick Higginbotham of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Justice John Paul Stevens of the United States Supreme Court, and then served for eleven years on the faculty of the New York University School of Law. Eisgruber received an A.B. magna cum laude in Physics from Princeton, an M. Litt. in Politics from Oxford University (where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar), and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. He is a member of the American Law Institute.

About Elise Sheidler:

With primary responsibility for University-sponsored public service internships and public interest post-graduate fellowships, Elsie advises students on the practice of addressing critical issues of public concern through innovative and creative work during the summer and/or after graduation. Elsie coordinates support for alumni involvement in public service and works closely with the Alumni Council Standing Committee on Community Service, as well as with classes, regional groups and individual alumni to inform and realize their civic engagement interests. Elsie focuses her work on building new relationships, sustaining existing relationships, and identifying opportunities for collaboration between students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners.

March 12th - Ivy League Men's Basketball Championship Game

The Princeton Alumni Association of Eastern Connecticut is pleased to host all Princetonians who attend the Championship game vs Harvard this Saturday at 4pm. The winner receives the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament!!

Regardless of the outcome of the playoff game, both teams have already won an Ivy League championship, which Princeton clinched with the win over Penn Tuesday night. It is Princeton's 26th Ivy title, the most of any Ivy League team. The teams split their regular-season meetings on February 4th at Princeton and March 5th at Harvard, each team winning on their home floor. This will be the first time in the 110-year history of the Princeton-Harvard series that the teams will meet on a neutral court. Princeton will be the designated home team for the playoff.

Tickets:

It appears that all reserved seating tickets have been sold, with standing room only available- and only from the Yale Ticket Office and can be only purchased in person (they only had 55 left at 1pm 3/10). Both Harvard and Princeton athletic offices are sold out of ALL tickets. However, Gilles Carter '80 has also purchased standing room tickets at $20 and will sell them at that price while they last. Parking:

Jay Pottenger '71 shares that parking will be a challenge, although the Yale lots adjacent to the Payne Whitney Gym (interactive map below) will be open - and free of charge. There is no nearby parking garage, and the afternoon tip-off should ensure that none of the downtown New Haven garages would be closed before (even) post-game "celebrations" (we hope) have concluded. There will be metered street parking ($1.50 per hour), and there is a surface pay lot around the corner from the gym, on Broadway (in front of the former Yale COOP, now a Barnes & Noble).

Post-Game Celebration:

Immediately after the game, join fellow Tigers at Yorkside Pizza, 288 York Street (100 yards from the gym) where will enjoy a pay-for-yourself pizza and beer bust.

Alternative:

Dave Thom '96 informs us that the game will be on ESPN3.com. This is not available on cable (only on the internet) but it works very well. You need a user account and password from a local cable provider or XBox live to make it work - go to ESPN3.com and try it out.

February 19th - Women's Hockey Meet-and-Greet

This Saturday, 2/19 the Princeton Women's Hockey Team comes roaring into New Haven to play Yale. The Tigers are coming off a sweep of Union and Renssalaer last weekend and are only one point out of a fourth place finish in the ECAC league. The game against Yale will be the final game of the regular season and will probably determine whether Princeton begins the league playoffs at home at Baker Rink, or in some other, lesser arena.

The Princeton women play a fast, exciting brand of hockey and total effort is the standard for every game. The team is coached by former Tiger hockey player Jeff Kampersal and led by Captains Laura Martindale, Paula Romanchuk, and Olympic team prospect Sasha Sherry.

After the game, the team will board their bus and drive a few blocks down the road to the home of Gilles Carter for the Second Annual Dinner and Reception to honor Princeton women's hockey. Last year's reception was great fun - a real highlight on a busy PAAEC schedule full of great events. If you want to know what's going on at Princeton today, come and meet this group of talented, poised young women and talk to them about academic and social life on campus and the concerns and interests of current Princeton students - and congratulate them on what has already been an excellent season.

The menu will be chicken Provençal, pasta, salads, and desserts to feed a very hungry group of hockey players, and the meal + wine and beer will also be available to parents, PAAEC members, & other alumni. This is a “no-charge” PAAEC event.

A great time is guaranteed.

It's Princeton basketball time again! The Tigers, undefeated in Ivy League play and off to their best start since 1999, come to Yale tonight at 7:00 p.m. Your local PAAEC alumni association is going to the game in force, and will be at Yorkside Pizza (York Street) for beer and pizza after the game.

Tickets are free for Yale students (just remember your Yale ID) and $6 for non-Yalies.

November 5th - Hockey vs Yale

The Princeton men's hockey team kicks off the ECAC Hockey portion of its schedule TONIGHT AT 7PM, as the Tigers look for an upset against reigning ECAC Champion Yale in New Haven. While it will be the third straight game in Ingalls Rink for the Tigers (after the 'Ivy Shootout' last weekend) it will be the Tiger’s first game this season against the primary tenant.

Yale opened its season last weekend with a pair of seven-goal outbursts against Brown and Dartmouth, and the Tigers lost a pair of closely fought 2-1 decisions to the same teams. The Bulldogs are currently ranked fifth in the national polls and were the ECAC preseason favorites, but the strong Tiger “D” and goaltending will keep them in the game.

Alan Rosner '76, who personally bought the tickets, still has several left!! Please come out and support the Tigers. Tickets can be picked up before the game at the rink, but please give Alan a call or drop him an email and let him know how many you can use. Let’s show the Tigers some support.

September 25th - Field Hockey vs Yale

The 2010 Tiger Women’s Field Hockey is off to a fast start, defeating their first three opponents (Bucknell, Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth) by a combined score of 17-2. The Princeton field hockey team enters the 2010 season ranked fourth in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll. Princeton was an NCAA semifinalist last year and ranked fourth in the final poll of 2009. The dominant Tigers enter the 2010 campaign looking for their sixth-straight Ivy title, its 19th overall and its 16th in the last 17 years!

*While we strongly encourage you to come to the game, this will not be an "organized" PAAEC gathering.

Join the PAAEC on September 5th at Edgerton Park in New Haven to watch The Winter's Tale, performed by The Elm Shakespeare Company!

The Carters have offered to serve beer and wine at their home (100 Edgehill Road, map below) to give everyone a chance to get together before walking to the park (a block away) together. The cocktail party/pre-play gathering will be at 6pm; pleasebring an appetizer to share. August 29th - Tiger Summer Party

The Princeton Alumni Association of Eastern Connecticut invites all area alumni, parents and friends to a late summer outing in Guilford to meet and mingle with Princetonians of all ages. We are hoping for at least some of our area's incoming students to attend- let's give them a warm welcome and send off to "the best old place of all"!

Activities will include good food, good drink, and some lawn games; there is also very nice Audubon nature walk on the property, with 14 interpretive signs (about 3/4 mile in length).

Proceed 1.1 miles, over the river, and the first right (about 1/4 mile) is The Meadowlands sign; the home is third on the right (up the hill)- Please park on the long driveway, or in the open field just beyond the driveway entrance.

From points east of Guilford, exit 59 to the stop sign. RIGHT turn on Goose Lane and first left on Clapboard Hill Road (BEFORE the Turnpike)- 1.1 miles, over the river, to the first right, Meadowlands- 3rd house on the right.

Annual PAAEC Book Awards

The PAAEC is proud to announce three students at Hill Regional Career Magnet High School were granted book awards by the association. The awards were offered broadly to New Haven area schools- but all three recipients were from Hill.

The students, Kaneez Fatema Anwar, James Gates and Timothy Stankye, submitted prize-winning essays to the PAAEC in response to its invitation to describe how Princeton alumni achieved the university’s motto: "Princeton in the Nation’s service and in the service of all nations." The students chose, respectively, to write about President James Madison, General David Petraeus, and First Lady Michelle Robinson Obama.

In announcing the decision, Book Award Chair Gilles Carter '80 commented, "These students thought deeply and made serious and acute observations about the importance of public and community service to our Nation!"

"I am consistently pleased to share in the recognitions of the multiple and varied academic and social achievements of Hill Regional Career Magnet High School's students," said Hill Regional Principal Michael Ceraso in an email. "Our three awardees are excellent representatives of our student body in their academic accomplishments and diversity."

PAAEC president Barry Nann '57 conferred the awards. The winners were given a letter citing their achievements and received inscribed books personally dedicated to each student by Toni Morrison, Princeton professor emeritus, and Nobel Prize winner. The association plans to repeat its awards next year throughout Eastern Connecticut.

Principal Ceraso informed us of the following about the award recipients:

Anwar looks forward to a career combining medicine and international relations, interests she discovered through her experiences with the Model United Nations Conference during her freshman year at Career High.

Gates plans to study chemical engineering in college, and has most enjoyed his activities in Medical Response Training (one of his high school classes) as well as his long-term involvement in the Boy Scouts of America.

Stankye's memorable classes included a project on swordfish which fueled his interest in becoming a marine biologist. In addition, he especially enjoys studying Latin and Greek.

May 15th - Garden Party & Annual Meeting

Join us for a garden party as we celebrate the Year of the Tiger! A short meeting to elect the new PAAEC Executive Committee* will be followed by a lecture from Henry Von Kohorn '66. Heavy appetizers will be provided as well as beer, wine, and champagne.

Henry is the current Princeton Alumni Association Vice-President and founder of the Princeton Prize in Race relations. The title of his talk is “Once a Tiger, always a Tiger: How Princeton supports its alumni and how its alumni support Princeton."
